Skunk Removal In Nassau
Skunk Removal In Nassau
We offer a humane cage trapping solution for skunks. Striped skunks are about the size of a house cat, and are mostly solitary and docile species. While skunks can seem harmless, they are best known for their ability to squirt an extremely potent and disagreeable secretion at potential attackers and can attack when they feel provoked.
Striped Skunks can be dangerous!
Striped skunks are common across New York, often residing in suburban and rural areas. As a homeowner, it is very important to understand the risks of striped skunks. According to the NYSDEC, skunks are vulnerable to a variety of internal and external parasites. They also can get and spread rabies and other wildlife diseases. Skunks have been the most commonly confirmed rabies species, other than raccoons, during the spread of raccoon rabies throughout New York.
Humane Nassau Skunk Trapping
According to SUNY ESF, underground dens in well-drained sites, which the striped skunk either excavates or, more often, uses after they have been abandoned by other mammals such as woodchuck or foxes, serves as homes. That was just the case at this homeowners house in Nassau where they had a family of skunks living under their back screened in porch.
This homeowner called us saying she had seen one skunk in her backyard and saw it go under her porch. Skunks can give off very foul odors and in this case of it being a mother and three juveniles, the skunks can act aggressive and it is best to call a professional to deal with a situation like this. This homeowner had a gap below her screened in porch that could have been an old woodchuck or fox den that now this family of skunks chose to live in. It is always best to preemptively try to manage situations like this by having trench and screening around your porch, shed, or deck to prevent any animal from digging to create a home.
The first day we set up four humane tube and cage traps for skunks. The following day, we checked the traps and there were two skunks! Each day the traps were checked and re-baited to make sure that the homeowners’ problem was removed. By the second to last day of the trapping period, we had trapped all of the striped skunks that were living under this homeowners porch. The homeowner was very happy that her problem was resolved and that she could comfortably sit in her backyard.
